With such a lavish spread of failures and flaws to choose from, it's hard to come up with any reason to watch this violent, sexist, racist excuse for a film. Having decided to get out while the getting is good, Pearson is looking for a reliable buyer to take the operation off his hands. His right-hand man, Raymond (Charlie Hunnam) meanwhile, has been confronted by seedy investigative journalist Fletcher (Hugh Grant) who claims to have some important information about both Micky and the potential buyers, which he is willing to sell for the low, low price of 20 million. If Raymond refuses his generous offer, Fletcher intends to take his material to the press. There are a lot of problems with The Gentlemen. In fact, with such a lavish spread of failures and flaws to choose from, its difficult to choose what to describe first. I think Ill start with the random racism that keeps popping up throughout the film like an offensive game of whack-a-mole. Multiple racial slurs, stereotypes, and behaviors occur throughout the film, none of which lend it any charm. Although this may accurately depict the predilections of Londons criminal class, it hardly makes for pleasant viewing. And if racism isnt bad enough, The Gentlemen is off-putting in areas of sex and gender too. There is exactly one female character with spoken dialogue, and when the antagonist is unsatisfied with beating and trying to kill her, he decides to rape her. What purpose in the film does this sexual assault serve, I can hear you asking? Is it a rude awakening to the dangers of a life of crime? Is it a deeply personal moment that causes self-reflection or character development? Pfft, of course not - this is a Guy Ritchie movie. Her sexual assault exists as a plot device to provide her husband with a reason to murder some more people. If that doesnt offend you enough, just wait - I havent even mentioned the character who is forcibly drugged and has sex with a pig. And Ill spare you extra detail on this little bit of bestiality. Youre welcome. To round off its unsavory content, the movie is saturated in profanity. Its an almost impressive scriptwriting achievement to stuff approximately 200 swear words into a 113 minute movie, although I have to remove points for a staggering lack of originality since 131 of the cusses are the same sexual expletive. No extra points for attempting (and failing) to be funny by naming a minor character “Phuc”. Three guesses how thats pronounced. Given the astounding level of abhorrent content, Im obviously not recommending this sorry excuse of a film for teen viewing or for discerning adults either. Im sure existing Guy Ritchie fans will enjoy this chaotic romp through Londons criminal underground. I, personally, would have preferred to clean my ears with a reciprocating saw, but theres no accounting for taste. Next time I want to hear this much profanity, Ill just take a ride on city transit without headphones. For instance, the movie is anti-heroin and cocaine but strongly pro-marijuana. Positive Role Models & Representations Story is about drug lords, but it portrays them in a counter-stereotypical way. A female garage owner employs mostly female mechanics, is a shrewd businessperson. Mickey may not be the greatest guy, but he's in a loving, committed relationship. Coach trains at-risk boys to keep them off the street, but how he shows them to make amends is iffy. These rare instances are set among a lot of criminal/dodgy behavior. Opens with someone getting shot in the head. Graphic violence continues throughout: shootings, threats with knives, beatings, lots of blood. Other violence includes poisonings, long falls, a rape. A woman sensually grabs her husband's crotch. Conversation is layered with innuendo. Off-camera bestiality played for shock and comedy. Characters curse constantly, especially "f- k. Guy Ritchie 's crime comedy won't be making any "best family movies of the year" lists, which may be the best marketing it can get. After a decade spent making more commercial films like Aladdin, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie returns to his core skill set: telling violent stories about thugs, criminals, fighters, and the underworld. He's clearly been feeling pent up, as it all comes out (literally) guns blazing. The Gentlemen has a clever concept, snappy dialogue, creative characters, and stupendous style. In a meta turn, it's delivered as a mystery narrated by a sleazy private investigator named Fletcher (Grant has rarely been better) who's turned the events into a script and peppers his "pitch" of sorts with filmmaking references. It's a whirlwind of moving parts, but the audience never gets lost in the tornado of events. The characters are all on the wrong side of the law and life, and adults can appreciate the film for what it is and see that crime doesn't pay, even when it does. That said, younger viewers may buy into the movie's pro-weed, pro-gun attitude. While Mickey says that his "hands are dirty. the ultimate takeaway is that coming up with an orderly, principled pot-farm business wasn't just OK, it was shrewd. In another situation, Rosalind nags her husband about having a gun because it's a ticket to prison; later, she's only able to protect herself with his gun, but is still woefully unprepared. Both of these suggest that following the law can hold you back or even hurt you. and if you're smart, you work around it. They say a gentleman always remembers, but when it comes to picking up trains of thought from pop culture, so do kids. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the role of guns  The Gentlemen. Do you agree with how they're portrayed? What's the impact of media violence on kids? How are drugs depicted here? Are there consequences for their use? Why does that matter? Norah rolüyle izlediğimiz Kristen Stewartın gözünden anlatılan bu hayatta kalma mücadelesi, gizemini koruyan derin suların bilinmezliklerini yaratıcı bir biçimde ortaya koyuyor. Zorlu yürüyüş esnasında gördüğümüz istasyonlar ve deniz canlıları her seferinde farklı farklı tasarlanmış. Filmin temposu hiç düşmüyor, her ne kadar basit bir senaryo üzerinden sunulsa da izlediğimiz görüntüler heyecan yaratıyor. Hayatta kalmak için A noktasından B noktasına ilerleyen ekibin attığı her adım gittikçe daha tehlikeli hale geliyor. Sırf görüntü yönetimi için tekrar izlenebilecek bir film olduğunu da eklemek isterim. Filmde karakter derinlikleri es geçilmiş, bu sebeple karakterlerle empati kurmanız mümkün olmuyor ancak temposu ve genel yönetimi çok iyi. Yönetmen Kristen Stewarta fazla yüklenmiş ve güvenmiş. Stewart rolünün altından başarıyla kalkıyor ancak ona eşlik eden oyuncular için bunu söylemek zor. Derin Sular Filmi ve Prometheus benzerlikleri. Filmde bana göre enteresan olan diğer bir şey çekilen sahnelerin bolca Prometheus tan etkilenmesi ile ilgiliydi. İlk başta afişlerinin benzer olduğunu düşünmüştüm ancak genel akış, mürettebat ve kopya sahnelerin bolluğu bu fikrimi perçinledi. Okyanusun dibi ile uzay arasında pek bir fark yok. İkisi de bilinmezlerle ve tehlikelerle dolu. Elbette Prometheusun bir felsefesi vardı, bu açıdan Derin Sular filmi çok geride kalıyor. Öte yandan bu türü sevenler için izlemesi keyifli ve ilginç bir yapım olmuş. Bu arada dalgıç kıyafetlerinin de mühendislerin kıyafetlerine bir parça benzediğinin ama çokta etkileyici olduklarını eklemek isterim. Norah hem lider ruhlu hem de çok başarılı bir mühendis. Keşke filmi daha iyi bir senaryo ve daha başarılı yan roller eşliğinde izleyebilseydik. Elbette bu keşke filmin kötü olduğu anlamına gelmiyor. Ben filmi hem akış olarak hem yönetim olarak beğendim ama izlediklerimi daha detaylı görebilmek isterdim. En nihayetinde klostrofobik ve karanlık bir film, sahnelerde hızlı olunca kaçırdığım fazlaca detay oldu ve tam olarak sindiremedim. Yazımın başında “Yeni bir Alien serisi mi doğuyor? ” demiştim. 1979da Ridley Scottla adeta özdeşleşmiş Alien filmi korku türünü uzaya taşımıştı. 1989da James Cameron, bir denizaltı mürettebatını Abyssin derinliklerinde tehlikeye atmıştı. 2012 yılında yine Ridley Scott imzasıyla izlediğimiz Prometheus ise bu türde çıtayı göğe taşımıştı. Dolayısıyla ardından gelen benzer türde yapımlara anlayışla yaklaşmalı ve zaten sayıları çok az olduğu için gözümüz gibi bakmalıyız diye düşünüyorum. Ben filmi eşimle birlikte tekrar izleyeceğim. Pacino is really magnetic and charming. But for me, Joe Pesci is the standout. Quietly deadly, magnetic, loyal, complicated, its him that will get the Oscar. The also trademark Scorsese humor is in-existent (except for the painting walls bit. De Niro looks disorient, in the worst physical (hunched over almost the whole movie) and acting shape ever and out of place. Not very surprising, either. He spent the better part of the last 15 to 20 years doing mock impressions of himself which after the novelty fade end him up in a series of quite dubious productions. Long, boring and disappointing While this is De Niros best performance in years, and its great to see Pesci back on screen, this film is strangely subdue and slow, and not half as entertaining or engrossing as either Goodfellas or Casino were. Unfortunately, this films seems to reflect a Scorsese who is aging, or perhaps the fault lies with the freedom that Netflix gave him, when a lot of editing could have been done to tighten this film up. Even if youre watching this on Netflix in say 3 x 70 minute sessions, not much really happens in this time to make it compelling enough to want to stay till the end. Disappointing by Scorsese standards First off, let me set this straight that Im not repel by long or slow films. However, The Irishman is at the very least 30-40 minutes too long, and the suspense sometimes is kill off by characters dragging the scene too much. The biggest offender would be the second last arc which Im not gonna spoil. Review the Movie, not the Director Peoples are losing their minds over the saint director, forgetting the movie. Sure, its well made, fascinating history. But its second nature for De Niro, and Pacino overreaches at times. The third reel is repetitive over the decline of the De Niro character. Would be a better movie at 2hr 30. In fact, I thought it had end about then, but it meander on another hour. Almost Perfection Other reviewers at the top, when sort by Helpfulness, have already cover much of what makes this film so exceptionally good. As such, and knowing that I have a tendency to sometimes exceed the number of allow characters, Id like to add just a couple of small things. Should have been made 20 years ago The De-aging effect was very distracting and not really hiding well the old age of the main cast. Deniro, Pacino and Pesci all move and talk like old people…perhaps because they are old and some cgi cant fully hide that fact. The direction of Scorsese is what keeps this movie engaging here and there but at the same time it remind me a lot of ‘Goodfellas and a feeling of ‘been there, done that. If only this movie was made 20 years ago (I know Scorsese wanted to do it for a long time) when the main cast was still relatively young than there wouldnt be any need for de-aging effect and everything would look more natural. DeNiro beating up diner guy is where it goes bad The movie stars bold, we get some nice action, a somewhat of a storytelling and trying to ignore weird looking CGI on DeNiros face.
